The
Budgerigar first came to England in 1840, brought from Australia by the Naturalist John
Gould. These wild birds were Light Greens as this was the only colour seen at that time.
Light Green Budgerigars were being bred in England and in the 1870's a Yellow mutation
occurred and since those early days a myriad of colours and varieties have appeared and
have been bred and maintained by the thousands of budgerigar enthusiasts of this and past
generations.
An interesting point to note is
that the Australian Government soon stopped the export of all birds from Australia and so
the Budgerigars in the UK today are all descended from those early imports. British
exhibition budgerigars are generally acknowledged as being the best in the world and due
credit should be given to their breeders.
At
one time the Budgerigar was the number one pet in the UK with the majority of households
having a blue or green budgie in a cage. They are still popular today as pets and so too
is the hobby of breeding and exhibiting budgerigars, which is enjoyed by about 4,000
people in Britain and many others around the World. |
